In this post, let’s see how to make theeyal. This is made in Kerala and also in some places which lies in the border like Nagercoil. This dish is made by dry roasting coconut until brown and is ground into fine paste. Then the vegetables are cooked in this coconut paste and tamarind until oil floats on the top. This theeyal tastes really delicious and goes well when had with rice, kootu or thoran and omelette. This can also be had with idly or dosa. Ingredients:

Grated coconut - 1 1/2 cup

Shallots - 3 to 4

Curry leaves - few

Chilly powder - 1 tbsp

Coriander powder - 1 tbsp

Oil - 1 tbsp

Mustard - 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves - few

Brinjal - 3

Tamarind - lemon size

Salt - as required




Recipe :

  1. Roast grated coconut in medium flame until golden  colour.
  2. Add shallots, curry leaves and roast until the colour changes to dark brown. Take care not to burn it.
  3. Cool down the mixture and grind it to a fine paste and keep it aside.
  4. In a pan, add little oil.
  5. Add mustard, let it splutter.
  6. Add few curry leaves.
  7. Then add brinjal which is cut into cubes. You can also add vegetables like drumstick, shallots, garlic, yam, black chana and make theeyal.
  8. Saute the vegetable until soft.
  9. Now add in the ground coconut paste, tamarind pulp (lemon size), required salt and mix well.
  10. Cover and simmer for around 10-15 minutes until oil floats on the top.
  11. Switch off and remove from stove.
  12. Yummy theeyal is ready ro be served!
