 Idiyappam and Kadala curry 



In this blog, let's see how to make Kerala style idiyappam and kadala curry. Idiyappam is made using rice flour and it is steam cooked. This goes well with kadala curry made using black chana. Friends, do give a try to this tasty recipe and share your valuable feedback.


Ingredients:

Idiyappam:

Idiyappam flour - 1 cup

Salt - 1/4 tsp

Warm water - 3/4 cup


Kadala curry:

Black chana - 1/2 cup

Onion - 1

Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp

Tomato - 1

Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Chilly powder - 1 tsp

Coriander powder - 1 tsp

Grated coconut - 1/2 cup

Garam masala - 1/4 tsp

Chopped Coriander leaves - 1 tbsp


For tempering:

Mustard - 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves - few

Red Chilly - 1 

Chopped coconut pieces - 1 tbsp






Recipe:
For making Idiyappam:

  1. Add flour, little salt in a bowl and mix well.
  2. Now add warm water little by little and mix with a spoon. (Water should be warm not too hot, but you should still feel the hotness.
  3. Once it’s of bearable heat, mix well with the hands and knead to a soft dough.
  4. Now fill the dough in the idiyappam stand.
  5. Grease the idly plate with little oil.
  6. Keep 1 tbsp of coconut on the idly plate.
  7. Now press  and make idiyappam on the plates.
  8. Steam cook for 10 minutes.
  9. Tasty idiyappam is ready


For making kadala curry:

  1. Soak chana in water for 4-5 hours.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add coconut oil.
  3. Once it’s hot, add finely chopped onions and saute until translucent.
  4. Now add ginger garlic paste and saute until the raw smell leaves.
  5. Add  finely chopped tomatoes to this and saute until mushy.
  6. Now add in the masala powders( turmeric, chilly and coriander powder.
  7. Sauté for 1 minute.
  8. Add soaked chana, required salt, little water and pressure cook for around 3-4 whistles.
  9. Meanwhile dry roast coconut until golden brown and grind it to a fine paste.
  10. Once the pressure releases, add ground coconut paste and simmer for 5 minutes until the oils separates on the top.
  11. Finally add a pinch of garam masala and chopped coriander leaves,
  12. In a separate pan, add little oil.
  13. Add mustard seeds. Let it splutter.
  14. Add red chilly, curry leaves and coconut pieces and fry until golden brown.
  15. Add the tempering to the kadala curry.
  16. Tasty kadala curry is ready to enjoy with hot idiyappam.


Notes:

  1. While making idiyappam, if the water is very hot, the dough might come out of the gaps while pressing. So make sure the water is warm before adding(not too hot)
