Suraikai Kootu
In this post, let’s see how to make a traditional south indian style of making bottlegourd/suraikai kootu . This recipe would be useful for those who are beginners in cooking and for those who are using this vegetable for the first time. Ingredients:
Bottleguard/Suraikai - 1
Moong dhal - 2 or 3 tbsp
Coconut - 4 small pieces
Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Chilly powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt - as required
Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
Red chilly - 1
Curry leaves - few
Hing - 1/8th tsp (a generous pinch)
Recipe:
- Peel the skin of suraikai/bottleguard and cut into small cubes.
- Wash moong dhal in water and keep it aside.
- In a mixie jar, add coconut, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, chilly powder and grind it to a fine paste. Keep it aside.
- In a pressure cooker, add chopped bottle guard, washed moong dhal. Add little water, salt and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
- Once the pressure releases, add ground coconut paste, add salt if required and simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Keep it aside.
- For seasoning, in a pan, add little oil, mustard, urad dhal, red chilly, curry leaves and pinch of hing.
- Fry well and add it to the curry/kootu.
- Healthy and tasty suraikai kootu is ready. This goes well with rice, rasam and papad.
