 Paruppu Sadham 






In this post, we will see how to make Tamilnadu style paruppu sadham(dhal rice). Paruppu sadham is a healthy and nutritious one pot rice which can be cooked in less than 15 minutes. When we have no mood to cook, these one pot rice comes for a relief. This can be had as such drizzled with little ghee or with papad, vegetable poriyal/sabzi. This recipe can also be helpful for beginners in cooking, bachelors and this also serve as a great option for packing lunch  for kids. Ingredients:

Rice - 1 cup

Toor dhal - 1/4 cup

Oil - 2 tbsp

Onion - 1

Garlic - 3 pods 

Tomato - 2

Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Sambar powder - 1 tsp

Salt - as required 

Water - 3 cups 


For seasoning :

Ghee - 1 tbsp

Mustard - 1/2 tsp

Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp 

Curry leaves - few 

Red chilly - 1

Hing - a generous pinch 





Recipe:

  1. Wash rice and toor dhal well.
  2. Soak it in water for around 20 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile add oil in a pressure cooker.
  4. Once the oil becomes hot, add chopped onions.
  5. Add little salt and saute until translucent.
  6. Add chopped garlic and saute for few seconds.
  7. Now add in chopped tomatoes and saute until mushy.
  8. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, required salt and 3 cups of water.
  9. Cover and cook for around 3 whistles at medium flame.
  10. Once the pressure is released, check if the rice is cooked well.
  11. In a separate pan, add little ghee for seasoning.
  12. Once it is hot, add mustard.
  13. Let it splutter.
  14. Add cumin seeds, a generous pinch of hing, red chilly and few curry leaves.
  15. Fry and add the seasoning to the cooked rice.
  16. Drizzle little ghee and serve it hot with papad and any vegetable sabzi/poriyal.


Notes:

  1. You can also use shallots instead of onion. It tastes good with shallots.
